UK: See them 17 July in London at Hoxton Square Bar & Kitchen. More details are available here.
Last week Akron/Family premiered ‘Until the Morning,’ the second single from their upcoming record, Sub Verses, (out 30 April via Dead Oceans) at SPIN.com.
They spoke with SPIN about the new record as being “a function of our growth as individuals, as people, and as artists.” Read the rest of the feature here, and have a listen to the shimmering harmonies of the grief-stricken ‘Until the Morning’ below.
As with other Akron/Family records, the perspective of Sub Verses shifts restlessly. From Shamanic hypno-mantras to noise-damaged soul anthems, North African street frenzy to droning microtonal balladry, modular synthesizer destruction to Lynchian Doo-Wop, their sound is propulsive, driven by it’s physicality.
Akron/Family is here, with drums and guitars like divining rods, calling on Sonny Sharrock and Link Wray, on Elvin Jones and John Bonham, on Jimmy Garrison and Aston Barrett.
But when they sing, they are calling on themselves, on the deep river of inspiration within that connects the whole. The narrative thread is one of the desert, that ancient, long-dried ocean floor that reveals a barren expanse of scorched fossils.
Akron/Family will be touring the US in support of Sub Verses, with appearances at SXSW and Sasquatch. More tour dates are listed here. Below, explore ‘No Room,’ the first single released from the record.
